The Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has raised alarm over the significant number of children out of school in the state, with estimates reaching approximately 240,000. This alarming figure has prompted SUBEB to take decisive action in collaboration with the state government to address the issue.
Mr. Victor Olabimtan, Chairman of Ondo SUBEB, revealed this worrisome statistic during a meeting with journalists in the state. He emphasized that while the situation is concerning, it is not unique to Ondo State but rather reflects a nationwide challenge.
In response to this pressing issue, the state government has initiated various measures to ensure universal access to education for all children in the state. One such measure includes plans to recruit more teachers for primary schools and enhance the learning environment to make it more appealing to students. Notably, over 900 public primary schools have undergone complete renovation to provide conducive learning spaces for pupils.
As part of efforts to tackle the problem of out-of-school children, UBEC and Ondo SUBEB organized extensive training sessions on the Basic Attendance Management Information System. This initiative aims to improve attendance tracking in classrooms by equipping schools with digital devices for efficient data management. Additionally, education stakeholders, including education secretaries and officers, underwent training to ensure the seamless implementation of the project.
Furthermore, substantial investments have been made in school infrastructure and educational materials through funding from UBEC and the state government's counterpart contribution. These investments have facilitated the construction, reconstruction, and rehabilitation of classrooms, provision of essential facilities such as fences and toilets, and supply of learning materials and equipment valued at over N2.2 billion.
The impact of these interventions is already evident in the improved performance of both teachers and students in internal and external examinations. Notably, students from Ondo State achieved commendable results at the National JET Competition, showcasing the positive outcomes of the state government's investment in education.
While efforts are underway to address the issue of out-of-school children, it remains a significant challenge not only in Ondo State but across Nigeria. With approximately 15% of Nigeria's out-of-school population, concerted efforts are needed at both the state and national levels to ensure every child has access to quality education.
