Nigeria Union of Teachers Urges Prompt Implementation of Teachers' Professional Salary Structure
Nigeria Union of Teachers Urges Prompt Implementation of Teachers' Professional Salary Structure. In a bid to enhance the welfare and professionalism of teachers in Nigeria, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has reiterated its call for the prompt implementation of the teachers' professional salary structure. The National President of the union, Comrade Audu Amba, emphasized the importance of this initiative during the union's 6th Annual Solemn Assembly held in Abuja.
The call for implementation stems from the approval made by former President Muhammadu Buhari in commemoration of World Teachers Day on October 5, 2020. President Buhari sanctioned a special salary scale for teachers, along with increased years of service and retirement age. Despite these approvals, the implementation of the professional salary structure and other promised benefits, such as rural posting allowance and science teacher's allowance, are yet to materialize.
Comrade Amba expressed regret over the delay in implementing these policies, stressing their significance for the development of the nation's educational sector. He urged the present administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritize the implementation of these initiatives to uplift the status of teachers and improve the quality of education in Nigeria.
The solemn assembly organized by the NUT serves as a platform to seek divine intervention and guidance for the union's activities. Comrade Amba highlighted the importance of invoking the blessings of God, inviting pastors and imams of repute to lead prayers for the union's endeavors.
The prompt implementation of the teachers' professional salary structure is crucial not only for recognizing the invaluable contributions of teachers but also for fostering professionalism and excellence in the educational sector. It is hoped that the government will heed the NUT's call and take decisive steps to fulfill its commitments towards the welfare and development of teachers in Nigeria.
