FCT Teachers Resume Work After Wike's Intervention
Primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have returned to work on Monday after the intervention of FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. The teachers had initiated an indefinite strike to demand the implementation of the 40% Peculiar Allowance and the payment of 25 months minimum wage arrears, among other outstanding payments.
Margaret Jethro, the Secretary of the FCT chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), confirmed the suspension of the strike, stating that Wike pledged to settle 40% of the over N7 billion minimum wage arrears. The remaining 60% will be addressed by the area councils, with payments starting from January and concluding by March.
Jethro mentioned that the minister assured that he would write to the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission for clarification regarding the entitlement of primary school teachers to the allowances. The teachers had initiated the strike on January 15, continuing a previous one from 2023, and the NUT suspended the strike on October 2, 2023, expecting a resolution within six weeks, which was not achieved. If necessary actions are not taken, the NUT indicated they would consider the next course of action.
